This could be the start of something new for Liga MX fans in the states. It has never been done before.
Official Liga MX match between América and Chivas to be played in the United States
Liga MX matches
Club América are set to play an official Liga MX match in the United States, against none other than rivals Chivas in the Clásico Nacional.
Amidst the Estadio Azteca’s closure for renovations ahead of the hosting of the 2026 World Cup, América will have to plan the full upcoming Apertura 2024 tournament without being able to play in their home stadium, pushing the club into playing official ‘home’ matches in stadiums across the country.
Guadalajara, Querétaro, Toluca and Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium — city-rival Cruz Azul’s home stadium — are some of the expected venues to be used by the club.
However, and according to W Deportes reporter Esteban Garrido, the Clásico Nacional between América and Chivas — the biggest regular season match in Liga MX — is bound to do the unprecedented and is likely to be played in the United States, with California being the most probable destination-state for the highly anticipated game.
The official league match is already confirmed by Liga MX to be played on September 14, a day prior to Mexican Independence Day and reportedly another huge reason in the club’s decision to take the game to California.
The playing of official matches abroad has turned possible after FIFA recently agreed to withdraw from an ongoing court case in New York that challenged the policy that prohibited domestic league games being played in other countries. This leisure would allow leagues such as LaLiga, Premier League, amongst others, to have clubs play official league games in the United States in the near future.
América and Chivas’ last head-to-head in the United States saw the historic Mexican clubs play in front of the jam-packed Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena, California, with over 90,000 fans witnessing Las Águilas 2-0 victory over the rojiblancos in a friendly last October, with the match reportedly generating a whopping $10 million in revenue.
