Head injuries are nothing to be trifled with. With all of the new information that has arisen concerning concussions and their long term effects, watching a player get knocked unconscious, or suffer any sort of trauma to the head, can be a very troubling experience.
So when the camera showed Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel on the ground on Sunday, blood pouring from his head, it was hard not to fear the worst. Replay did not help.
Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud had accidentally stepped on Martin Skrtel’s head with the bottom of his boot, effectively driving his cleats across Skrtel’s scalp. Needless to say, Skrtel came off second best.
Luckily, the injury proved to be more superficial that anything else and, after a few minutes, Liverpool’s doctors had him stitched up, wrapped up, and ready to go. Oh, but by “stitched up” we mean he had cold hard metal rammed into his skull.
That’s right, Martin Skrtel got staples put into the back of his head during a game, and continued to play. Not only did he play, he headed in the match-saving goal deep into extra time. Giving us reason to believe that Martin Skrtel feels no pain, which is apparently the first step in the progression to knowing no fear.
Martin Skrtel, you are a bad*ss. No one knows what was going through your head when you rose for that towering header, but we all hope it was, “no one makes me bleed my own blood!”
