We could see Johnny play in the Champions League next season. And not with Real Betis.
USMNT's Johnny Cardoso has been in incredible club form since signing for LaLiga’s Real Betis last winter, making himself an undisputed starter for the Spanish club since his arrival in January and quickly becoming a fan-favorite in Sevilla.
He’s started in 13 of the 15 matches played by his club in the second half of the season, scoring one goal and providing two assists along the way.
Now, despite making the move to Europe from the Brazilian first division and being only 22 years of age, the former Internacional of Porto Alegre man’s performances have been enough to garner the attention of top European clubs, with many of them looking to make a move for the young midfielder in the summer transfer window.
Barcelona, Atlético and Dortmund interested in Johnny Cardoso
The USMNT player’s big break could come sooner than expected.
According to Pedro J. González, Real Betis-focused reported for Diario Sevilla, Cardoso has gathered interest from FC Barcelona, Átletico de Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig — all clubs considering the American as a possible signing in the summer. Clubs from both the Serie A and Premier League have also inquired for the American.
Cardoso arrived to Sevilla in exchange of $6 million (with Internacional keeping 20% of a future sale) and has a contract with the Beticos until 2029 with a release clause of $80 million.
Betis, however, could consider a significantly lower transfer amount for Cardoso, with the club willing to let go of the American for around $30 million if the offer is on the table.
Johnny, after just three months of performing in LaLiga, has tripled his transfer market value ($17 million) and will be looking to increase this amount heading into what is a very promising summer for the American with the USMNT in the Copa America — a well-known showcase for young players that are of the interest of top European clubs.
