Another USMNT player to Liga MX? Cade Cowell in talks with Chivas

Cade Cowell has been linked with a move away from MLS and into Liga MX, and the likelihood of him playing in Mexico this January is increasing every single day. Here's what we know about the Cade Cowell transfer rumors.

Europe or Chivas? Cade Cowell transfer looking likely in during January transfer window.

It was reported earlier this week that the San Jose Earthquakes and USMNT player had received two offers from clubs outside MLS for a transfer in the current window. Reportedly, a Liga MX club and a Europa League club sent their formal offers for the 20-year-old.

Days later, it was revealed that Chivas was the club interested from Liga MX, with the Rojiblancos willing to spend a hefty transfer fee for the American winger.

This transfer for the California native could make him the second USMNT player to take a transfer to Mexico this winter, with FC Cincinnati’s Brandon Vázquez close to signing a deal with Monterrey.

Can Cade Cowell transfer to the "Mexican-only" Chivas?

If you’re familiar with Liga MX and Chivas in particular, you might remember that the 12-time Mexican champion only allows themselves to play with Mexican players. They’ve done so for the past 116 years.

While Cowell has eight international caps for the USMNT, he remains eligible to play for the club by having a Mexican-born mother.

In fact, this direct connection to Mexico helped the Cowell obtain his Mexican nationality earlier this week, something that would facilitate his place in the squad as a native as opposed to being a foreign player.

A sign of his upcoming decision?

Cowell has made 114 appearances for San Jose since his debut as a 15-year-old in 2019, playing in a total of eight matches for the USMNT’s senior squad along the way.
