USWNT Ends Mexico’s World Cup Dreams With Unconvincing Win

Mexico needed a miracle to keep its World Cup hopes alive.

It never came.

Kristie Mewis scored a controversial goal in the 89th minute to finally break the deadlock as the U.S. beat Mexico 1-0 to officially end La Tri’s 2023 World Cup aspirations on Monday in Nuevo León. The USWNT claimed first place in Group A having already clinched World Cup qualification on Thursday at the Concacaf W Championship.

Romeo Beckham's First Inter Miami Goal Is A Bending Free Kick For Dad

Brace yourself for the sequel, Bend It Like Beckham 2: Going Bottom Bins On Orlando City B, because 19-year-old Romeo Beckham, son of Old Golden Balls himself, has curled home his first set-piece goal for Inter Miami CF II in MLS Next Pro.

Romeo's first foray into football was back in 2014 with Arsenal's Academy, but he was released and briefly pursued a fledgling tennis career while training alongside Andy Murray. However, he returned to the sport last year by joining Miami's reserve team and it looks like the correct decision.

Iran Fires Coach 4 Months Before Playing USMNT At World Cup

Dragan Skočić has been dismissed as Iran head coach with little more than four months to go to the World Cup finals in Qatar, Iran's state news agency IRNA reported on Monday.

It said that Iran's football federation had decided to dismiss the 53-year-old, adding that "there are unconfirmed reports that several Iranian candidates have a good chance to replace Skočić."

The move comes after Skočić, who took over from Marc Wilmots as coach in February 2020, secured the Iranians a spot at the World Cup by topping their qualification group ahead of South Korea.

Cucho Hernández Scores Late Game-Winner In Columbus Crew Debut

Cucho Hernández broke a tie in the 83rd minute in his MLS debut and Derrick Etienne Jr. scored twice as the Columbus Crew overcame a two-goal, second-half deficit to defeat the host Chicago Fire 3-2 on Saturday.

Hernández took an outlet from Luis Díaz, who had two assists, and chipped the ball inside the left post over goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina as the Crew (6-5-7, 25 points) extended their unbeaten streak to six (3-0-3).

Wayne Rooney Could Return To D.C. United As Head Coach

D.C. United is in a bad place right now. One of Major League Soccer’s flagship clubs suffered its worst-ever defeat on Friday night, a 7-0 humbling from the Philadelphia Union to fall to 13th in the Eastern Conference with the second-lowest point total in the league. So maybe these Wayne Rooney D.C. United coach rumors aren’t such a bad idea.

Kanté, Loftus-Cheek Omitted From Chelsea’s U.S. Tour For Not Being Vaccinated

Chelsea midfielders N'Golo Kanté and Ruben Loftus-Cheek will not feature in the club's preseason tour to the United States due to their COVID-19 vaccination status, the Premier League side said on Saturday.

Entry rules for the U.S. say that all visitors over 18, barring American citizens and other limited exceptions, must be double vaccinated against the virus.

It was unclear whether the two players were unvaccinated or had received only one dose.
