LIVERPOOL, England - Cristiano Ronaldo stepped off the bench to earn Manchester United a 2-1 victory at Everton in the Premier League on Sunday, taking his career goal tally to 700 in the process.

Just as they did last weekend in their derby mauling at the hands of local rivals Manchester City, United found themselves behind early on at Goodison Park after Alex Iwobi curled a sublime strike into the net from 22 yards.

Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi will become the first female official to take charge of a Serie A match when Sassuolo host Salernitana on Sunday, the Italian Referees' Association (AIA) said.

Ferrieri Caputi became the first woman to officiate a top-level Italian match last year when Cagliari played Cittadella in the Coppa Italia. She joined Serie A's officiating team in July.

"This is a historic moment," AIA president Alfredo Trentalange told a news conference on Wednesday.

MUNICH - Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández laughed off the notion that playing at Bayern Munich is like visiting the "house of horrors" ahead of Tuesday's mouthwatering Champions League Group C clash.

Newcastle United have signed goalkeeper Loris Karius on a short-term contract until January with an option to extend the deal until the end of the season, the Premier League club said on Monday.

The 29-year-old has been signed as a replacement for Karl Darlow, who is sidelined with an ankle injury.

"We are pleased to add Loris to our goalkeeping group. He is a very good goalkeeper with Premier League and European experience and he will provide competition and support over an important part of the season," manager Eddie Howe said.

Transfer deadline day is traditionally known for last-minute deals and panic buys as clubs scramble to sign players for the long campaign. Something a little different happened this summer in England's East Midlands.

Nottingham Forest — which had signed an astounding 18 players up to this point — brought in three more players before the end of transfer deadline day, bringing its total to 21 signings for the summer transfer window. Two deals — for Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi and free agent right back Serge Aurier — fell through at the final hurdle.

We are less than a month into the Premier League season but we already have our first managerial firing, as Bournemouth manager Scott Parker received his pink slip on Tuesday after just four league matches.

The season started promisingly for the team with an opening day win against Aston Villa, then went downhill with three massive defeats against Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool (by a combined score of 16-0). Even with the poor results against the trio of title contenders, the Cherries are in 17th place, one point above the relegation zone.
