Stony Brook Makes SC Top 10 At No. 2 With Incredible Buzzer Beater

The NCAA soccer season began Thursday night and Stony Brook gave us our first mind-blowing moment. Two players making their collegiate debuts scored two minutes and four seconds apart to propel the Seawolves to a wild 2-1 victory, the latter Stony Brook women’s soccer goal making SportsCenter’s vaunted Top 10 at No. 2.

It all started in the 88th minute when freshman Hannah Maracina was taken down in the box and fellow freshman Linn Beck converted the ensuing penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1.

Then, in the dying moments of the match, Stony Brook found an unlikely late equalizer, going full Route 1 after goalkeeper Ava King punted the ball long. A touch from a defender sprung Maracina in on goal, and she took one touch before firing home the match winner, the ball trickling over the line with one second on the clock.

Stony Brook Women’s Soccer Goal On SC Top 10

You don’t often see buzzer beaters in soccer, but what a way to win it. Shoutout for the goalkeeper assist from King, who is also a freshman.

The Stony Brook goal was reminiscent of Landon Donovan’s late winner against Algeria at the 2010 World Cup or Abby Wambach’s incredible 122nd-minute equalizer against Brazil at the 2011 Women’s World Cup.

The goal was good enough to land at No. 2 on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays on Thursday night.

We’re honestly shocked ESPN noticed women’s soccer was taking place on Thursday with shitty preseason NFL games going on, so we’re happy to see the Worldwide Leader not ignore women’s sports for once.

While on the subject of ESPN, we have to give kudos to The18’s David Moore for being called “this guy” by ESPNFC for a video he created a year ago.
