Los Blancos Get Covered In White Stuff

Real Madrid’s up-and-down (mostly down) season continued Saturday with a 2-2 draw against Levante. But Los Blancos saw the entire city of Madrid turn white on Monday. A rare snowstorm in the Spanish capital saw Santiago Bernabeu coated in snow — a clear sign of … something.

The Real Madrid snow meant the club canceled practice on Monday, so Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t have to train on his birthday. The 33-year-old was probably disappointed about that because he’s inhuman, but a day off could do the players well as they try to rediscover their mojo.

Madrid City Hall activated the highest alert on its Winter Emergency Plan and suggested commuters take public transportation instead of driving on Monday. A number of flights were canceled and traffic delays were widespread. Temperatures dipped below freezing, but the weather should warm up by the time Real Madrid hosts Real Sociedad on Feb. 10.

This unusual cold snap has to mean something for Real Madrid’s season, right? The club has struggled in La Liga (19 points behind Barcelona), was knocked out of the Copa del Rey and has a tough match against PSG in the Champions League Round of 16. Los Blancos had scored 11 goals in their last two La Liga matches before Saturday’s disappointing draw.

So does the Real Madrid snow signal a rebirth, a pristine new start for Los Blancos? Or does it mean hell hath frozen over and the club will continue to struggle at unprecedented levels, possibly even missing out on qualifying for next season’s Champions League?

Zinedine Zidane’s club is in fourth in La Liga, two points ahead of fifth-place Villarreal (though Madrid has a game in hand). It’s not inconceivable for Los Blancos to completely whiff on reaching the Champions League all together. And with PSG in the Champions League, anything can happen

Barcelona may have La Liga wrapped up (although Atletico Madrid could make a run), but only a fool would count Ronaldo and Real Madrid out in the Champions League.

One thing is for sure after this Real Madrid snow: This is clear proof global warming is a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese government. How else would you explain snow in a location about the same latitude as Pittsburgh?
