Cuauhtemoc Blanco To Retire, Run For Mayor

We were devastated when we heard the news. Cuauhtemoc Blanco is retiring. He will play his last game on April 18 against Atlas. The world of soccer will lose a bright, shining, balding potbellied star.

The world is cruel sometimes. But there's a silver lining here: Cuauhtemoc Blanco is entering the realm of politics, running for mayor of Cuernavaca, the capital of the state of Morelos and El Temo's adopted hometown.

Blanco reportedly starts his campaign on April 20, and it should be a joy to watch, because everything Blanco does is a joy to watch. He will represent the Social Democratic Party (PSD).

Evidently, Blanco is fed up with politicians and wants to help improve things. We’ve heard this type of rhetoric before, but Blanco makes us want to believe it. We sincerely hope he doesn’t stop until he’s President Blanco.

When he announced his candidacy, Blanco was accused of not actually living in Cuernavaca, so he had to produce his voter registration to proves he lives there. Apparently, he has also faced threats, to which he responded: “Here I am: I am wearing the pants and I’m not afraid.”

We’re not sure what kind of idiot would threaten Cuauhtemoc Blanco, but as one of Mexico’s most beloved athletes of all time, he likely has nothing to worry about.

This begs an interesting question: What will mayor Blanco be like if he wins? We know almost nothing about his politics, so we can only speculate. But if people love Cuauhtemoc Blanco as much as we think they do, the world is going to find out sooner rather than later.
