With all due respect to FIFA and PES, the most fun soccer video game is Rocket League. As fun as it is to play as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in more traditional soccer sims, playing soccer with a rocket-powered car is so much better.
Last night I was fucking pissed. All I wanted to do was get one more win online and go to bed, but I was getting absolutely hammered by everyone I faced. The wine wasn’t helping, but damnit I wanted to keep playing until I won.
It was then that I realized, for the first time in years, this FIFA had me hooked, for better or worse.
FIFA 21 officially releases worldwide on Friday, Oct. 9, but anyone who ordered the Ultimate or Champions editions, as well as those provided early access codes by EA Sports, are now free to play the game. With the early reviews arriving, is FIFA 21 worth it?
The elephant in the room is the situation faced by video game developers over the course of the ongoing pandemic. I’ve got huge respect for Pro Evolution Soccer’s decision to admit that PES 2021 is nothing more than a “season update” with the latest lineups, kits, etc. and a reduced retail price of $29.99.
FIFA 21 comes out quite soon: Oct. 6 if you pay for a more-expensive version and Oct. 9 if you pay for the regular-priced game. Just like the U.S. presidential election, you’ve got to be either completely clueless or haven’t been paying attention if you haven’t already decided whether or not you want to buy the game. The question then becomes: Should you wait to buy FIFA 21 when PS5 and Xbox Series X come out or buy FIFA 21 on launch day?
The answer, as it turns out, is surprisingly simple, thanks to a rare case of EA Sports, the game’s creator, being nice to its fan base.
On Tuesday the FIFA 21 soundtrack was revealed. Like the previous edition, there are separate tracklists for the regular mode and the Volta street mode, but we’ll be focusing on the 36 tracks that comprise the one that people actually play.
I’m happy to report that while I initially recognized some of the artists — LA Priest, Louis the Child and Tame Impala among them – I hadn’t yet heard a single track off this playlist, which amounts to roughly two hours of listening time.

Every September in recent memory, soccer fans have been given the opportunity to download a demo for the latest FIFA game to get a sneak peek at the game they’ll pour hours into throughout the year. This year is different. So where is the FIFA 21 demo?
Usually, EA Sports releases a FIFA demo about three weeks before the launch of the full title. FIFA 21 is set to have a full release on Oct. 9 (it’s available earlier if you wanna pay extra). By that math, the FIFA 21 demo should have arrived by now.
