The eight best (or worst) names for the Bay Area’s new NWSL team coming in 2024

The Bay Area in California won the bid to become the home for the National Women’s Soccer League’s 14th team. The new club is backed by USWNT legends Brandi Chastain, Aly Wagner, Danielle Slaton and Leslie Osborne along with global investment firm Sixth Street.

It’s not clear yet where in the Bay Area the new club will be, but it will begin play in the 2024 season.

Rumors of slow subscription growth for MLS Season Pass make sense, but Apple won't care (yet)

If the most sensational rumors are to be believed, Apple is looking for a quick exit from its 10-year, $2.5 billion deal with MLS while the league prepares for an NASL kind of collapse into oblivion.

The Athletic previously detailed an opt-out clause in the contract predicated on Apple obtaining a certain number of subscribers within a set timeframe, but it's impossible to speculate from the outside since Apple hasn't released any viewership statistics through six matchweeks.

3 midweek U.S. Open Cup games for your consideration

The Second Round of the 2023 U.S. Open Cup kicks off Tuesday with clubs from the third (USL1/NISA) and second (USLC) divisions now joining the fray — there will be cupsets.

After a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic, 2022 was one of the competition's best years with Union Omaha (USL1) reaching the quarterfinals and Sacramento Republic (USLC) going all the way to the final before MLS side Orlando City won its first piece of major silverware.

USWNT World Cup jerseys released — they're a lot better than the USMNT ones

After Nike set the bar about as low as it gets for the USMNT in Qatar, we're happy to report that the USWNT jersey options for the 2023 World Cup are much more desirable.

The sales people said we'd learn to love the USMNT kits eventually, but it's been five months and I still don't like them. As for the latest USWNT efforts, I do believe these will look better and better as the team moves toward the World Cup final in Sydney.

Angel City scores at 90+10' to beat Orlando in absurd NWSL match

Matchday 2 of the 2023 NWSL season came to a close Sunday with a crazy finish between the Orlando Pride and Angel City at Exploria Stadium.

The visitors took the lead in the 39th-minute from the penalty spot through Claire Emslie after Alyssa Thompson was fouled in the area.

I think Messi's going to Miami after watching Lyon beat a soulless PSG

There was an interesting moment during Saturday's MLS 360 show when analyst Shep Messing said he had "inside info" on a Lionel Messi move to MLS and that "it is going to happen and it's going to happen soon."

Like any great amateur sleuth, I then carefully watched PSG's home match against Lyon on Sunday looking for clues. I think I found them: Messi wants to get out of Paris like a bat out of hell.

Ricardo Pepi reaches double figures in the Eredivisie with another impressive goal

With just seven matches remaining in the Eredivisie season, Groningen slipped closer to relegation following a 3-1 away defeat to Fortuna Sittard on Sunday. They're seven points from safety and looking destined for the Eerste Divisie.

The lone bright spot for Groningen has been 20-year-old American striker Ricardo Pepi, who's on a year-long loan from FC Augsburg. Pepi scored Groningen's lone goal of the match and now has 10 this season to go with three assists.

The club has only managed 26 goals in 27 games, but Pepi has now been involved in 50% of them.

Do ties in MLS have a feel? 5 takeaways from MLS Matchweek 6

5 takeaways from MLS Matchweek 6

#1. Columbus is scoring goals for fun

Life under new manager Wilfried Nancy left a bit to be desired for the Crew. The former CF Montréal boss saw his new side secure just four points from its first four matches, but back-to-back dominant displays have given this marriage a new outlook.

Jordan Morris continues unbelievable start to season with 5th goal in 2 matches

Jordan Morris continued his historic goal scoring run as his tally in the 21st minute helped the Seattle Sounders to a 2-1 win over the LA Galaxy on Saturday in Carson, Calif.

Seattle (4-1-1, 13 points) ran its unbeaten streak against the Galaxy to 10 games, and became the first MLS team in history with a streak that long against the Galaxy (0-2-3, 3 points).
