RIP Squirrels — Benin National Team Changes Nickname To Cheetahs

West African country Benin has opted to ditch its 'squirrels' nickname and will be known as the Cheetahs from Monday, the country’s football federation said.

The old les Écureuils moniker has long been criticised by Benin fans who felt the small size of a squirrels meant that their team was also considered to be insignificant. Hence the football federation has chosen a bolder nickname, along the lines of Cameroon’s 'Indomitable Lions' or the 'Elephants' of nearby Ivory Coast.

Source: Qatar Wants World Cup To Begin A Day Early

The World Cup in Qatar will kick off a day earlier than scheduled if FIFA's ruling bureau agrees to a plan to hold the opening ceremony and the host nation's first match on Sunday, Nov. 20, a source close to the discussions told Reuters.

Normally the ceremony is conducted before the kickoff of the first game of the tournament.

Klopp expressed anger at this year's World Cup adding to players' already hectic schedule, with the tournament ending five months before the domestic season concludes in May.

The Premier League season will be paused from Nov. 12 to Boxing day to accommodate the Nov. 21 to Dec. 18 event.

Premier League Players To Only Take Knee Before Certain Matches This Season

Premier League teams will limit their pre-match anti-racism gesture of "taking the knee" to only some significant games from the new season, the league said on Tuesday.

The Black Lives Matter cause was taken up by Premier League clubs in 2020 following the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis in May that year.

Premier League clubs wore the Black Lives Matter logo on their shirts before it was replaced by "No Room for Racism."

The men's teams also met at Wembley in the 1966 World Cup final, which England won after scoring a goal that was deemed to have crossed the line but is still disputed by many Germans.
