Australia’s Goofy Ass Goalkeeper Sends Socceroos To World Cup

Years of World Cup qualifying came down to a few kicks from 12 yards out for Australia and Peru on Monday. In a dramatic shootout to decide the penultimate place at the 2022 World Cup, it was the goofy histrionics of Australia goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne that proved decisive.

Redmayne saved Peru’s sixth and final penalty attempt to send the Socceroos to the World Cup with a 5-4 shootout victory after a 0-0 draw on Monday at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Qatar. Australia will join Group D with France, Denmark and Tunisia in November.

DOHA — FIFA is confident semi-automated technology to assist with quicker Video Assistant Referee decisions could be ready for the World Cup in Qatar later this year, world football's governing body president Gianni Infantino said on Monday. Additionally, body cameras are in consideration to prevent referees from being attacked.

Trials on the AI technology will continue in the coming months, but Infantino said there was significant progress.

DOHA - Australia and Peru both came through playoffs to qualify for the last World Cup, but only one of them will advance this time round when they meet in their inter-continental playoff in Doha on Monday for a place at this year’s finals in Qatar.

Australia qualified for the 2018 finals by beating Honduras over two legs while Peru edged New Zealand for their place in Russia. This time, however, the two have been drawn to play each other in a single match at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium at Al Rayyan, one of the venues for the finals in November and December.
