When Bolton Wanderers and Salford City faced off in a League Two tussle on the outskirts of Manchester on Friday, the match featured two sides that had converged on the lowest level of the English Football League. It was a match over a decade in the making as the sides were once eight divisions apart in English football. 

During the 2007-08 season, Bolton was a Premier League club and featured in the Europa League, while Salford played in the North West Counties League Division One, the country's ninth tier.

It’s not at all what you want to see when you turn on the TV to watch Barcelona play at the Camp Nou, but Wednesday’s Champions League match against Dynamo Kyiv transformed into a goalkeepers’ duel between the returning Marc-André ter Stegen (six saves) and 18-year-old Ruslan Neshcheret (11 saves). 

With Lionel Messi still unable to score from open play and Antoine Griezmann unable to score by any definition of the word, Barcelona’s 2-1 victory was narrowly achieved but ultimately retains the club’s 100 percent record in Group G.

One of the rarest moments in football is when, with one team trailing late, the goalkeeper rushes forward to join the attack and actually pulls off the miracle equalizer. It's rare, but it happens (our favorite example being this bicycle kick).

After a disappointing defeat to Manchester United to open the Champions League campaign, Paris Saint-Germain needed to right the ship on Match Day 2. A visit to Istanbul Basaksehir on the one hand meant facing the Turkish champs, but on the other represented a must-win match against arguably the weakest side in a stacked Group H.

That match marked a Champions League debut for Trubin, who recorded three saves.  

It is not uncommon for a goalkeeper coach to be named to a team roster, especially for a lower-league club during an injury crisis.

Burton Albion's Kevin Poole was 50 years old in 2013 when several injuries forced him don the No. 13 shirt and sit on the bench for the Brewers' League Two match against Wycombe Wanderers. A month later, the Burton goalkeeper coach also dressed as a backup for three matches after first-choice keeper Jordan Pickford was recalled by parent club Sunderland.

BARCELONA — Lionel Messi became the first player to score in 16 consecutive Champions League seasons as he guided 10-man Barcelona to a 5-1 victory over Hungarian side Ferencvaros in their Group G opener at the Camp Nou on Tuesday.

Messi netted from the penalty spot in the first half for his 116th career goal in the competition, before the lively Ansu Fati added a second.

SAINT PETERSBURG, Russia — Club Brugge made a perfect start to their Champions League Group F campaign after a stoppage time goal by Charles De Ketelaere gave them a 2-1 win at Zenit St Petersburg on Tuesday.

After a drab first half, Emmanuel Bonaventure fired the visitors ahead in the 63rd minute when he swept in a rebound from two metres after Yaroslav Rakitskyy twice cleared close-range efforts by De Ketelaere off the line.
