Toronto FC Espera Con Un Cocodrilo Al Cruz Azul: La Previa De Los Cuartos De Final De La Concachampions

En la previa de su duelo por los cuartos de final de la Liga de Campeones FC ante Cruz Azul, el Toronto FC reveló un nuevo refuerzo. Can Any MLS Clubs Upset Their Liga MX Opponents In The CCL Quarterfinals?

With five MLS clubs and three Liga MX sides making up the quarterfinals of the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League, the stage is perfectly set to deliver the matchups we all want to see.

While one MLS side is guaranteed passage to the semifinals (Atlanta and Philadelphia do battle in the quarters), we’re eagerly anticipating 2018 CCL finalist Toronto against 2014 CCL winner Cruz Azul, reigning MLS Cup titleholder Columbus taking on 2019 CCL victor Monterrey, and 2020 MLS is Back Tournament champ (the highest accolade around) Portland clashing with 2016 CCL top dog América.

Restoring Parity: The Current CCL Format Has Been Detrimental To Smaller Clubs, But Change Is Coming

When the topic of the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) is discussed among American soccer fans, the inevitable focus is on the struggles of MLS sides in the competition.

Since the tournament was expanded and renamed in 2008, a Mexican side has won the title every season. More than half of the CCL finals have been contested between Liga MX teams and only four MLS sides have reached the final in that timespan.

The last American team to lift the trophy was LA Galaxy back in 2000, only the second MLS club to win in the 33 seasons of the competition up to that point.

América Pide Castigo: La Violenta Barrida Que Le Fracturó El Peroné Derecho A Chucho López

Toronto Shocks León, Philadelphia Hammers Saprissa To Advance In CCL

Patrick Mullins and Justin Morrow scored in the second half and Toronto FC defeated Mexican club León 2-1 on Wednesday near Orlando, Fla., to advance to the second round of the CONCACAF Champions League 3-2 on aggregate.

Mullins struck first in the 55th minute when teammate Jacob Shaffelburg fed him a low cross into the box and he delivered it into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Ocho Goles En Contra, Tres Desertores Y Todos Los Dramas De La Visita Del Arcahaie FC Al Cruz Azul

León’s Fernando Navarro Wins Goal Of The Tournament On Day 2 Of The CCL

Toronto FC was handed a tough draw in the Concacaf Champions League against Liga MX’s 2020 Apertura champion Club León, meaning that the MLS side’s first competitive fixture of the season was a daunting trip to the Nou Camp for the first leg of their Round of 16 matchup.

The difficulty of the task became much more apparent in the 25th minute, when León’s Fernando Navarro probably claimed Goal of the Tournament on only the second day of the competition.

Watch: Alajuelense Players Appear To Talk Ref Into Giving Brad Guzan Red Card

The Concacaf Champions League kicked off Tuesday night and it didn’t take long to remember why Concacaf can very much be used as a verb or adjective to describe weird shit happening. While the call was the right one in the end, it appeared the referee may have been swayed to give the Brad Guzan red card because of the protests from players on the other team.

The Columbus Crew Can End Liga MX’s Champions League Domination

The 2021 CONCACAF Champions League begins on Tuesday, Apr. 6 with the beginning of the Round of 16. Since the competition’s rebrand in 2008, all 12 titles have been won by Liga MX (Tigres won last year's edition). The question, as always, is when will MLS finally come to the table? It’s a feat that hasn’t been achieved since the LA Galaxy in 2000.
