Meet Union Omaha, The Last Remaining Third-Division Side In The U.S. Open Cup

After two long years without the U.S. Open Cup because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was the game that made us fall in love with this glorious competition all over again.

Third-division Union Omaha — contesting just its second-ever Open Cup match — travelled to 60,000-seat Soldier Field on April 19 to take on four-time champion Chicago Fire and twice came from a goal down, including an equalizer in the 122nd-minute, to prevail in a penalty shootout.

Joe Morrone, Tactical Mastermind And American Father Of The ‘Corner Stall’ Ploy

As with many soccer coaches of his era, Joe Morrone did not fit the profile of what we would consider a modern soccer coach.

First, he did not have a background in the sport — "I think the first time I saw a soccer game, I was playing in it," Morrone said

Then there was his appearance on the sideline — donning sunglasses and a suit and toting a clipboard that rarely survived the full 90 minutes.

Good For The Game? The Uneven Relationship Between Major League Soccer And The USL

The original purpose of this piece was to find players who began their careers in American soccer in the lower league and worked their way up to Major League Soccer — not players who went out on loan, rather athletes who signed for a USL or NPSL club, impressed at that level, and drew the attention of an MLS side.

But after a thorough examination of numerous MLS rosters, I found that this type of career path is almost nonexistent; such upward mobility is nearly impossible in American soccer.

Kansas’ Title-Game Sportsmanship Moment Was Straight From Soccer Playbook

One of my first memories of watching soccer with a non-soccer fan involves a friend asking why one team just kicked the ball out of bounds for no reason. The answer, of course, was sportsmanship. For decades, players who saw an opponent injured would kick the ball out of bounds so they could receive treatment.

Latest Sexual Abuse Allegations Show Systemic Rot Reaches All Levels Of U.S. Soccer

Back in November, Rory Dames tried to quietly exit the NWSL with a press release hours before a Washington Post story outlined years of his alleged abuse of players while he coached the Chicago Red Stars. One of U.S. soccer’s greatest strikers is hanging up her boots to join the coaching ranks. Amy Rodriguez, who won at every level, retired from the NWSL on Friday to join her alma mater, USC, as an assistant coach.
