Concacaf Champions League changes its name – we explain the tournament’s new format

Two days after Club León claimed the Concacaf Champions League title, the soccer bosses of the region have decided to rename the tournament: Starting in 2024, officials want you to call the competition the Concacaf Champions Cup.

We also suggest the ConcaCup.

At least 12 dead in stampede at El Salvador stadium

At least 12 people died and an unspecified number were injured in a stampede at a soccer stadium in El Salvador on Saturday, the Central American country's government said.

Alianza FC and Club Deportivo FAS were playing the second leg of their playoff quarter-final game at the Cuscatlan stadium in San Salvador, the country's capital, when play was suspended after a stampede broke out in the general section.

The venue is one of the largest stadiums in Central America and has an official capacity of more than 44,000 fans.

Mexico qualifies for Beach Soccer World Cup with stunning GK strike at the death

With only the two finalists qualifying for the 2023 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Dubai, Saturday's two semifinals at the Concacaf Beach Soccer Championship in Nassau were do-or-die clashes pitting four-time champion Mexico against host nation the Bahamas while the United States played El Salvador in a rematch of the 2021 final (won by La Selecta).

How to get way too invested in this week's Concacaf Beach Soccer Championship

The 2023 Concacaf Beach Soccer Championship has begun in the Bahamas with spots at this year's FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup on the line. There's always plenty of drama (the last three editions have provided three different winners), but even more captivating is the wild variety of bangers we see out on the sand.

Monday was only day one of the competition and things got rowdy.

With Umbro supplying, Guatemala and El Salvador are looking better than ever

The USMNT vs. El Salvador match in the CONCACAF Nations League on Monday night yielded two moments of beauty: (1) Ricardo Pepi's filthy game-winner and (2) the Umbro away kits that La Selecta wore at Exploria Stadium.

USMNT player ratings vs. El Salvador: All aboard the Pepi train!

The USMNT got the job done Monday night by beating El Salvador 1-0 at Exploria Stadium to advance to this summer's CONCACAF Nations League Finals in Las Vegas.

The Americans needed only a draw to make it happen, and everyone at home probably would've agreed to that after a scoreless opening 45 that was painful to watch. USMNT wordsmith Anthony Hudson called it "a little bit too transitiony." The highlight was La Selecta fans starting an "olé!" chant after stringing together a couple passes, only for a guy to pass it straight to Daryl Dike.

If you are too sensitive, YOU SHOULD NOT WATCH what happened to Irven Ávila's elbow

It's been a while since I last saw an injury on a soccer field that sent shivers right down my spine. However, the unfortunate elbow dislocation suffered by Peruvian player Irven Ávila ended the stretch.

If you don't want to see what happened to him, it's time to close this tab and keep living your life far from pain. Please, don't say I didn't warn you.

Irven Ávila elbow injury

Just four minutes after scoring the first goal in Sporting Cristal's 2-1 win over Atlético Grau, life was not very kind for the 32-year-old veteran Ávila.

Which MLS teams are best set up for CONCACAF Champions League success?

For MLS teams who are just beginning their domestic seasons, the Champions League can act as a distraction or a potential hurdle to not be taken out by. Injuries are to be avoided and as we saw last season when Seattle won the entire tournament, becoming the first team in league history to do so, they struggled to continue that form after reaching their continental pinnacle.
