El 11 de agosto de 2012 es un día dorado en la historia del fútbol mexicano. Literalmente. En aquella jornada, el Tri conseguiría colgarse la medalla de oro en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres, batiendo en la final a un Brasil que contaba con el talento de Thiago Silva, Marcelo, Hulk, Oscar y un tal Neymar. 

Camino al título, el Tri enfrentó en la fase de grupos a Corea del Sur, el Gabón de Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang y Suiza. En los cuartos de final sufrió, pero en la prórroga se deshizo del Senegal de Sadio Mané por 4-2, mientras que en semis despachó a Japón por 3-1.
