László Kiss made his World Cup debut in 1982 as a second-half sub for Hungary. Twenty minutes later, he was celebrating a hat trick and a trifecta of records.
In a World Cup match that set a number of records, the one set by László Kiss may be the most remarkable and one that will be difficult for anyone to top.
Hungary faced off against El Salvador to start play in Group 3 at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. The Magyars won 10-1, setting the record for most goals by a single team in a match and tying the record for largest margin of victory. Poor Salvadoran keeper Luis Guevara Mora will go down in history as the only keeper to allow 10 goals in a single World Cup match.
But more impressive than those feats was the record-setting, eight-minute hat trick from Kiss, who came on in the 56th minute with his team already up 5-0. Kiss is the only substitute to ever score a hat trick in the World Cup.
László Kiss scored his first goal in the 69th minute by bringing down a low corner, turning and firing right past Guevara. Three minutes later Kiss scored on a lovely chip from just inside the 18. And four minutes after that, Kiss completed his hat trick by pounding home a rebound from a shot Guevara had parried to the top of the 18.
Despite the lopsided victory, László Kiss and Hungary were unable to advance past the group stage, finishing behind Belgium and Argentina. Perhaps that was just karma for running up the score.
