Languishing near the bottom of the Portuguese Primeira Liga table, heading into the break at 1-1 with S.C. Braga would’ve represented an exceptional 45 minutes of football for C.D. Tondela on Sunday. However, just on the stroke of halftime, Braga struck the crossbar before Tondela defender Ricardo Costa smashed the rebound into his own net.
Costa is clearly trying to crack the ball out for a corner given his positioning and the unenviable task of defending whilst facing his own goal. But it’s not the thought that counts in professional soccer, especially when you get it as pathetically wrong as this. It’s so horrendous that the Braga supporters behind the goal have to do a double take before celebrating. Unfortunately for Tondela and Costa, the match would end at 2-1 in favor of Braga.
Tondela are 17th in the 18-team league, Braga are in fifth but already nine points behind leaders Porto.
