The U.S. men’s national team hasn’t had a coach in more than a year — what the fuck is U.S. Soccer doing?!
When the U.S. lost to Trinidad and Tobago to be knocked out of the 2018 World Cup, U.S. Soccer had more than 600 days before the team’s next meaningful match. They had time to figure out what kind of coach they wanted to go forward with, do interviews and hire the right man for the job.
But U.S. Soccer sure is taking its sweet time — and it reeks of clumsiness.
I thought the U.S. might hire a coach after the World Cup, to snap up one of the newly available national team managers, but that period came and went, which implies the U.S. wants an MLS coach, who could’ve been hired after last MLS season. Waiting more than a year to hire an MLS coach is like taking so long to figure out where to eat that you end up going to McDonald’s because everything else is closed.
All this while, Dave Sarachan has been the interim coach, having taken over for Bruce Arena after the calamity in Cuovo. Can you imagine being interim anything for more than a year? My wife might like me to be her interim husband until Idris Elba comes calling, but at some point you’ve either got to rip off the interim tag or send him on his way.
In the time it’s taken for the U.S. to not hire a coach, England has gone from hating its team to loving its team to hating its team to loving its team again. I’m not sure where we’re at now, but at least we have a coach to love and hate.
C’mon U.S. Soccer, get your shit together. I haven’t seen this much indecisiveness since my wife said “I do.”
