We are truly in a golden age for UEFA men’s Champions League goal scorers. From all-time greats to rising superstars, the Champions League top scorers 2020-2021 list is arguably the most intriguing ranking of goal scorers in the history of the sport.
The Champions League is where the best of the best compete to be crowned the best club in Europe. Winning the big-eared trophy is the pinnacle of one’s career and arguably the best way to define one’s success as a player.
The Champions League top scorers 2020-2021 list features four of the top five all-time goal scorers. No one has scored more in Champions League matches than Cristiano Ronaldo (134), with Lionel Messi (120) hot on his heels. Remarkably, nearly half of Ronaldo’s goals (67) have come in the knockout rounds. Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema are also all-time great Champions League scorers, and all four have scored in the 2020-2021 Champions League campaign.
In addition to the players who have already proven themselves to be legends, this season also features some of the most exciting young goal scorers in decades. Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland are scoring at a rate never seen before. Ronaldo owns the current record for most goals in a single Champions League campaign with 17 in 2013-14. He also owns the records for second- and third-most at 16 and 15, the latter of which he shares with Lewandowski. Messi’s best season came in 2011-12 when he scored 14 times, which at the time tied the record that had been held since 1963.
The best scorer in the Champions League has been a Real Madrid player a record 12 times, mostly thanks to Ronaldo’s record seven scoring titles. Ronaldo also owns the record for most assists in the Champions League with 42, six ahead of second-place Messi.
