Unbelievable Images Show Why Copa Libertadores Final Was Postponed

We’re not gonna lie: We were really looking forward to watching Saturday’s Copa Libertadores final first leg between Buenos Aires rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors. But once you see these images, you’ll completely understand why the Superclásico matchup was postponed, with the Copa Libertadores makeup date scheduled for Sunday.

(Here’s how to watch the Copa Libertadores final on Sunday.)

Initially, the Copa Libertadores final was postponed until later on Saturday. The decision to postpone to Sunday came about 90 minutes before the scheduled kickoff in Buenos Aires.

While the match would have gone on in simple rain, the staggering amount of rainfall proved too much for the pitch at La Bombonera to handle. A look at some of the images makes it clear why a Copa Libertadores makeup date had to be found, even with many fans already in the stadium.
