Canelo Álvarez Practices The Sweet Science, But He Also Loves The Beautiful Game

One of the most well-known Mexican boxers right now, Canelo Álvarez definitely did not play soccer growing up. He's been fascinated with boxing since the age of 13, and he would go on to become a professional at 15 years of age. But is there a Canelo Alvarez favorite soccer team?

The Guadalajara-born fighter has become this generation’s Mexican star. Mexico has often done great in the world of boxing, and Álvarez is carrying the torch passed on to him by past greats of the sport.

He is, however, a man often surrounded by some of the best soccer players of his native country. His family is originally from Michoacán, but he was born in the outskirts of Guadalajara, Jalisco. Accordingly, he had to decide whether to support Monarcas Morelia (Michoacán) or Chivas (Guadalajara).

Unsurprisingly, Álvarez would go on to support Chivas, one of Mexico's most famous Liga MX sides. He's posed for photos numerous times with former Chivas player Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez.

That's probably the side of soccer that Álvarez likes best — he loves to surround himself with El Tri greats, from Chicharito to Memo Ochoa and Miguel Layun.

Canelo has stayed true to his country’s love for not just boxing, but also for fútbol. But Canelo made the right decision growing up. He’s recorded 52 wins out of 55 fights, and his only loss came at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in 2013.

He's already been a proven world champion in various divisions, defeating American Daniel Jacobs in his most recent fight on May 4. It’s rumored that his next fight could be against Callum Smith, a Liverpool native who’s undefeated after 25 fights.
