AC Milan has made its worst start in Serie A in 81 years this season. Winning just two and losing four games out of six, under-fire manager Marco Giampaolo is under even more pressure to get the Rossoneri up and running.
The former Sassuolo manager replaced Gennaro Gatuso as manager over the summer and the move was lauded by fans. Now, things don’t look as good.
AC Milan has not lost four games in its first six matches since 1938. Almost all of these losses have come to lesser opponents: Udinese, Inter, Torino and, now, Fiorentina.
Fiorentina visited the San Siro on Sunday with newcomer Franck Ribery starting as a center forward alongside Federico Chiesa. Not only did the two front men cause problems, so did the rest of the Fiorentina team.
After 78 minutes, Fiorentina was 3-0 up at the San Siro. AC Milan would get a consolation goal two minutes later, but it mattered little. Matteo Pablo was sent off midway through the second half and the visitors capitalized after being a man up. Gianluigi Donnarumma saved a penalty from Chiesa but could not keep out the final goal of the game from Ribery in a 3-1 defeat.
A number of odd roster choices were made by Giampaolo as well, who left off Giacomo Bonaventura, Lucas Biglia, Lucas Paqueta, Ante Rebic and Samu Castillejo from the starting lineup. The players left off were arguably much better than those in Milan’s starting lineup. In the other dugout, former AC Milan and current Fiorentina manager Vincenzo Montella had quite the field day.
AC Milan probably must win in Genoa next weekend if Giampaolo wants any hope of staying on as AC Milan manager.
