Andres Guardado has been a consistent figure in Mexico’s national team. Ever since he put on the El Tri shirt, Guardado has fought hard to represent his country. The Guadalajara native has developed a reputation as a workhorse and skilled midfielder for club and country.
He has been one of the consistent lights of El Tri and has made a career out of taking on defenders with grace and skill. Most recently, the PSV winger received the Golden Ball in El Tri’s Gold Cup win but that wasn’t enough for Guardado in 2015, he also won the Eredivise League Championship with PSV and starred in Mexico’s 3-2 win over the United States in the CONCACAF Cup.
Not only that, he hass been one of the success stories of those who venture to Europe to play professionally. He’s been a stalwart of the European game, having spent almost all of his career in Europe. He’s incredibly loved by PSV fans and El Tri fans.
His performances for PSV have been so great that fans in Holland have come to truly love Guardado, demonstrating their love for their star by holding banners that say “Andres Guardado, our Golden Mexican Eagle, has to be PSV Eindhoven”
Ever since he debuted for Atlas in Liga MX, people knew he was meant for greatness and people spoke of his potential again when he signed for Deportivo La Coruna a few years later.
“Let no one forget what a great footballer he is. He’s a great signing, I have a lot of enthusiasm for the year ahead and we must take care of him because he will be a star for sure. The year that’s to come with be that of Andres, for sure” said then-Deportivo La Coruna coach Miguel Angel Lotina.
Guardado would go on to impress for Deportivo, winning Club Player of the Year Award for Deportivo in 2007 and 2008. He stayed at the club for five years, racking up 143 appearances, 25 goals and 34 assist for the Spanish club. He would move elsewhere in Spain in 2012, spending a season and a half at Valencia before an ill-fated trip to Bayer Leverkusen in the German league, where he would make 4 appearances for the club.
Afterward, he didn’t return to Spain, instead signing for PSV, where he is now into his second season for the club. He currently has 58 appearances for PSV, scoring twice and assisting nine times. Overall, he has played more than 250 club matches in his nine seasons in Europe.
