Chinese political revolutionary Mao Zedong once said “political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.” Obviously he was a man fond of frightening his own people with weapons in order to keep his citizens in line. That’s one way of carrying out your duties as an elected official.
To contrast that completely, newly-sworn in Mayor of Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, Cuauhtemoc Blanco has a different way of getting people to like him and support his politics: buy the city that elected him a top professional soccer team. At least, that's what one outlet reported. They did so on Dia de los Inocentes, the equivalent of April Fools' day, so we're inclined to believe it's not true.
But just for a laugh, here are some of the details:
Jaguares or as they are now known (temporarily) Chiapas F.C. plays in Liga MX and are based out of Tuxcla Gutierrez Mexico. With Blanco buying the team, they will now be based out of Cuernavaca.
Cuau had made the acquisition of a top soccer club one of his campaign platforms and he will fulfill that promise quickly with the addition of this new club team. Blanco will buy the team with funds from his own wealth and the money allocated to him by the city to spend on such ambitions.
With the change of locations, Jaguares will be renamed to Colibries de Morelos.
Even though the report is likely false, it got us hoping that there's a future in which Cuauhetmoc Blanco owns a soccer team and moves it to his hometown just because he can. Someday.
