It’s an accomplishment any time a player can score for her country. Abby Wambach has done it 184 times, more than any other player (male or female) in the world. While that feat is amazing, Abby didn’t score her first goal until her second game.
Last week, it took Stephanie McCaffrey only 48 minutes in the 3-starred USWNT jersey to get her first international goal. She’s the 18th player to accomplish this noteworthy act in USWNT history. Below is the list of First Cap, First Goal performances. A few players, including current star Christen Press are members of the First Cap, First and Second Goals Club.
In case you’re curious, 46 players have performed the same achievement in USMNT history including Landon Donovan with this gem against Mexico. I think his career worked out pretty well after that. The last man to accomplish the first cap, first goal was Juan Agudelo, who scored the game winner against South Africa in 2010.
As young players try to get noticed for next year’s Olympics, I’d wager another name or two will be added to this list by the end of the year.
