Alyssa Naeher wins U.S. Female Player of the Year to end USWNT career with a bang

United States women’s national team icon Alyssa Naeher was named the 2024 U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year, finishing her international career on top.

Naeher, 36, was instrumental in the USWNT’s success in 2024 providing key stops in the Olympics, SheBelieves Cup and Concacaf W Gold Cup that ultimately led the U.S. to winning all three.

Recognition for her work last year came not only from U.S. Soccer as she was named the Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year and selected in FIFA’s Best Women’s XI lineup.

Naeher becomes just the second goalkeeper to win the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year after Hope Solo won the award in 2009.

The Chicago Red Stars goalkeeper won 40.8% of the vote from national team coaches, USWNT players, NWSL coaches, U.S. Soccer members, select media member and fans. Defender Naomi Girma, last year’s winner, was second with 32.2% of the vote.

Naeher’s 2024 highlights came in the biggest moments like when she twice stonewalled Canada in penalty shootouts. The USWNT went to penalties against Canada in the W Gold Cup and SheBelieves Cup.

In both shootouts Naeher saved three penalties and stepped up to score hers.

Perhaps her most iconic moments of the year came in the dying minutes of the Olympic semifinal vs. Germany and gold medal match against Brazil. The Germans looked certain to find a late extra time equalizer, however an unbelievable kick save from Naeher kept the Americans ahead. She would have another clutch save in the next game.

Naeher is the only goalkeeper in history to keep a clean sheet in a World Cup final and an Olympic gold medal game.

There may never be another goalkeeper like Naeher. Even in her 115th and final game for the U.S. she showed her class as the USWNT defeated the Netherlands 2-1 despite being outshot 22-5. It helps to have the greatest goalkeeper in the world in games like that.

“This is an incredible honor, to cap off what has been a very special year with this team,” Naeher said to U.S. Soccer. 

“This team is made up of a special group of players, coaches and staff and all year you could feel that energy and that we had the opportunity to achieve something great. I was inspired all year long by my incredible teammates; the work we put in, the commitment to the team and our goals, and all of their love and support.”

Naeher will continue her club career with the Chicago Red Stars.
