Alex Morgan’s professional soccer career is over as she walked off the field for one last time on Sunday in an emotional farewell. On the international stage she finishes her career with 224 appearances for the United States women’s national team and 123 goals.
One statistic stands out about the rest, however.
The USWNT never lost a game that Alex Morgan scored in.
Morgan scored in 86 games on the international stage and the USWNT’s official record of those 86 games is 76 wins, 10 draws and no defeats.
alex morgan retires with what i believe is one of the most impressive stats in the history of the game.
the uswnt went 76-10-0 whenever she scored a goal. meaning the uswnt NEVER lost a game that alex morgan scored in.— danielle | thank you alex (@sandyeggowfc) September 6, 2024
Now we know you might be thinking: What about the 2011 Women’s World Cup final vs. Japan or the 2016 Olympics vs. Sweden?
The USWNT lost both of those games in a penalty shootout.
Officially in the record books, losses in penalty shootouts are recorded as draws. If that’s not enough, then we’ll reword the statistic just for you.
“The USWNT never lost a game in regulation or extra time when Alex Morgan scored.” Better?
Morgan finished her career as the fifth highest goal scorer for the USWNT, seven goals behind Kristine Lilly.
Top USWNT goal scorers
- Abby Wambach: 184 goals
- Mia Hamm: 158 goals
- Carli Lloyd: 134 goals
- Kristine Lilly: 130 goals
- Alex Morgan: 123 goals
The overarching theme of Morgan’s goals with the USWNT can be boiled down to one word: clutch.
When the team needed a hero to step up it was so often Morgan. Even her first-ever goal for the USWNT was a late-game equalizer vs. China back in 2010.
One month later Morgan was scoring another crucial late goal as she found the back of the net in the 94th minute vs. Italy in a World Cup playoff. Without this goal the USWNT may have not qualified for the 2011 World Cup and altered the course of the team’s popularity and dominance in the future years.
Perhaps her two greatest moments will be the headers she scored against Canada in the Olympic semifinal and England in the 2019 World Cup semifinal.
