Lloyd’s journey to becoming a mother wasn’t straightforward and the USWNT icon shared her battle against infertility.
In a Women’s Health article written by Lloyd she detailed her difficult path to pregnancy which included a number of setbacks and three different rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF).
“I was very naive to think that we wouldn't have any issues getting pregnant,” Lloyd wrote in her article. “And so it began. The casual whatever happens, happens turned into disappointment month after month. I was starting to feel like this was a race against the clock.”
Lloyd was going through all the emotions of trying to get pregnant while also making a litany of appearances, being an analyst for the 2023 Women’s World Cup and doing various interviews.
“I’ve conquered the soccer world and I consider myself really strong, but I was at my weakest during this entire process,” Lloyd said.
The two-time World Cup champion hopes that her story will encourage other women struggling to not give up.
"I have been told that nothing I have accomplished or faced in my soccer life will ever be as great as being a mom," Lloyd said. "I know this will change me forever, and I am so excited for the journey."
Lloyd has received waves of support and congratulations from former teammates and other star players.
Mallory Swanson, Lindsey Horan, Kelley O’Hara, Marta, Sam Mewis, Sofia Huerta, Aitana Bonmati, Sam Kerr, Rachel Daly, Jozy Altidore and Stu Holden all commented on Lloyd’s Instagram post sharing their excitement with her.
