Earlier this summer, Louis van Gaal hinted that Manchester United would bring in a "mystery striker." He was, obviously, very mysterious about who it would be. There were rumors about Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo, among others.
Now, though, we know who it is. Manchester United's new striker (presumably the mystery man van Gaal was referring to) is...Marouane Fellaini! Van Gaal announced that Fellaini will feature as a striker this year.
We will be honest, we did not see this coming. Sure, Fellaini, is tall and good at headers, but he's also a midfielder. So, instead of buying a mystery striker from another team, van Gaal opted to make a mystery striker out of one of the players on his own team. Now that, friends, is a plot twist wirthy of a John Grisham novel.
Manchester United's current stable of strikers includes Wayne Rooney, who scored a hat-trick last time out but hasn't looked good lately otherwise, and Chicharito Henandez, who did this. Therefore, United's need for a mystery striker is pressing. but is the big Belgian (we're contractually obligated to refer to him as "the big Belgian") up for the challenge?
One thing is for certain: Louis van Gaal is either very good or very bad at mysteries.
