Mario Gotze, the man that scored the game winning goal of the 2014 World Cup Final, has been labelled as one of the biggest flops of the year.
According to a study put out by kicker, 183 Bundesliga players participating in a yearly survey have voted Mario Gotze the second biggest flop in the league, behind only Dutchman Rafael van der Vaart.
It may be hard to see how a player of Gotze’s ability, who scored 15 goals and assisted 7 more in 48 games for his club, could be labelled as such a let down. The numbers, however, only tell half of the story.
Gotze has been criticized for his poor attitude and work ethic on the field, with no one less than German legend Franz Beckenbauer coming out and saying that the player needs to “finally grow up."
"That behaviour is a little bit juvenile. It just doesn't fit at FC Bayern. It's time for him to finally grow up. We of course know that he is an outstanding talent, but he has yet to translate it [into consistent performances]."
As one of the most talented players in the world, Gotze’s name arises in countless transfer rumors every Summer, and being named the second biggest flop in the Bundesliga will only add to the speculation.
Gotze ended his year with a Bundesliga trophy to his name.
