The United States women’s national team are off to a flying start in the Olympics with a 3-0 victory against Zambia followed by a 4-1 masterclass vs. Germany. The USWNT have already secured a place in the quarterfinals.

As crazy as it sounds, some fans will be hoping they lose their final group stage game to finish second in the group.

Who would ever want that?? We’ll explain.

USWNT fly in Marseille and defeat Germany to claim first place in Group B

The U.S. women’s national team recorded their second victory of the 2024 Paris Olympics, defeating European powerhouse Germany in the second match day of Group B on Sunday.

After an opening 3-0 win against Zambia last Thursday, the USWNT made it clear that they want no issues when it comes down to qualifying to the next round, with the American attacking trio of Trinity Rodman, Mallory Swanson and Sophia Smith all having goal contributions once again.

The United States men’s national team bounced back from their opening defeat to France with a fantastic 4-1 triumph against New Zealand in their second group stage game. Saturday’s result ties the biggest Olympic win in USMNT history.

The U.S. men had never scored more than three goals in the Olympics before with their best-ever result being a 3-0 victory vs. Costa Rica in 1984.

Following the 3-0 defeat to France in the opener the USA sat bottom of the group. New Zealand defeated Guinea 2-1 in their first game.

Canada deducted 6 POINTS for drone scandal, head coach receives 1-year ban

PARIS — Canada were deducted six points from the Olympic women's soccer tournament and their head coach Bev Priestman banned for a year, global governing body FIFA said on Saturday, following a drone spying scandal that has tainted their gold medal defense.

Priestman, who has coached the team since 2020, and Canadian officials Joseph Lombardi and Jasmine Mander have been banned from any soccer-related activity for one year for "offensive behavior and violation of the principles of fair play", FIFA said.

Canada’s soccer programs are in hot water after the women’s team were discovered spying on New Zealand’s private practices at the Paris Olympics. It’s now been reported that both the men’s and women’s have a history of using drones to spy on opponents.

PARIS — New information from Soccer Canada showed suspended women's head coach Bev Priestman was likely aware of the drone use that has caused a scandal at the Paris Olympics, Canadian Olympic Committee CEO David Shoemaker said on Friday.

The COC removed head coach Priestman on Thursday after her suspension by Canada Soccer. The decision followed complaints from New Zealand that Canada flew drones over two of their training sessions before the two sides met in their opening Olympic fixture, which Canada won 2-1.

Two Mallory Swanson goals vs Zambia in the 24th and 25th minute put the United States women’s national team out of reach as they cruised to a 3-0 victory in their opening game of the 2024 Olympics. 

The USWNT’s first group stage game was played in Nice, France.

The USA came out swinging to begin their quest for gold, peppering Zambia’s goal with shots. Swanson and Trinity Rodman both rocked the crossbar with efforts early in the first half.
