There’s quite literally nothing better in soccer than scoring a last-minute goal that gives your team the win, right?
Well, Abel Hernández did just that, but in the most spectacular fashion possible. Worthy of a ceaseless replay.
Abel Hernández’s outrageous last-minute bicycle kick vs. Plaza Colonia
Uruguayan Primera División league-leaders Peñarol visited Plaza Colonia in the 12 matchday of 15 in what was a tough visit for the charrúa giants last Sunday.
The black and yellow struggled to make the most out of their visit, being stuck tied at 1-1 as the clock hit 90 minutes — putting their comfortable five-point lead over Nacional in jeopardy ahead of the closing matches.
However, in added time and in the seventh and last minute (and seconds), Peñarol’s Abel Hernández threw the script out the window and scored one of the best goals we’ll see in 2023.
Last minute, to seal the win and practically the Apertura 2023 title — all topped off with a top-bins off-the-bar bicycle kick.
Take a bow, Abel.
Peñarol’s Twitter account, as expected, has wasted no time since and already started the Puskas award campaign for the worldie. "Puskas, is that you?"

A potential nomination for Hernández for the award in 2024 would leave him as the second-ever Uruguayan to make the list (Juan Manuel Oliveira, 2013) and going as far as winning the award would turn him into the first-ever charrúa to take the award home.
Will this goal be enough?
