No country has been distancing itself from middle school putdowns as effectively as Turkey this summer.

Back in June, the United Nations agreed to officially change the country's name from Turkey to its Turkish name of Türkiye. While obviously not a big deal inside the country, NPR's Peter Kenyon reported that the move was a rebrand "to dissociate the country's name from the bird that traditionally appears on American dining tables at Thanksgiving and from the slang definition of a turkey as something that doesn't work or is foolish."

Süper Lig legend Edin Višća suffered one of the most horrifying arm injuries we’ve ever seen in soccer on Friday. The veteran of nearly 400 matches in Turkey’s top flights was attempting to draw a foul call when he fell on his arm during Trabzonspor’s 1-0 win over Hatayspor on Friday.

Mario Balotelli went off on the final day of the Turkish Super Lig on Sunday. The Italian scored five goals, but it was the final Balotelli goal vs Goztepe that set the internet on fire.

Balotelli’s Adana Demirspor crushed relegated Goztepe 7-0 on Sunday in a match that meant little for either side. Demirspor was stuck in mid-table regardless of the outcome, and Goztepe had long since been relegated.

That didn’t stop the home side from putting on a show, especially Balotelli, who had a hat trick by halftime.

Since the Süper Lig's inception in 1959, only two clubs outside Istanbul have ever won the title. Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, Beşiktaş and İstanbul Başakşehir have combined for 58.

It makes sense when you consider Istanbul's standing as the most populated of Turkey's 81 provinces, and the most populous European city, at 15,519,267 — almost three times more than Turkey's capital city and second-most populated Ankara.

Former Galatasaray and Turkey defender Ahmet Calik has died in a car crash, aged 27, his club Konyaspor confirmed on Tuesday.
