Kylian Mbappé named as France captain at just 24 years old

PARIS — Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappé has been named France captain to succeed Hugo Lloris, the French football federation (FFF) said on Monday.

French sports daily L'Equipe reported that Mbappé had accepted the captaincy after speaking with coach Didier Deschamps.

LONDON — Crystal Palace sacked manager Patrick Vieira after 20 months in charge on Friday following the 1-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion that left the south London club three points above the Premier League relegation zone.

Palace are the only side in the league without a win in 2023, having drawn five and lost six of their games. Their last league victory came on Dec. 31, 2-0 at Bournemouth, and they are 12th on 27 points with 11 games to play.

Report: Thierry Henry interested in USMNT job

Former France national team star Thierry Henry, who has ties to MLS as a coach and player, has expressed interest in the United States men's national team coaching vacancy, ESPN reported Thursday.

Henry, 45, scored 51 goals in 123 games for France from 1997-2010 and played in the World Cup four times. A star for clubs like Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal and Barcelona in Europe, Henry played 122 games for the New York Red Bulls from 2010-14.

Gio Reyna headlines USMNT Nations League squad

Gio Reyna and Christian Pulisic were among 24 players named in the United States squad for a training camp in Orlando ahead of the CONCACAF Nations League final four, U.S. Soccer said on Wednesday.

The U.S. are bidding to retain the title and qualify for this year's Gold Cup.

It will be the full squad's first meet-up since last year's World Cup.

"We come out of the World Cup knowing we're capable of more, and we're excited to keep moving forward in this group," said interim manager Anthony Hudson, who replaced former coach Gregg Berhalter in January.

Berhalter cleared by U.S. Soccer investigation, Reynas left with even more embarrassment

An investigation into former U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter's dispute with his wife outside a bar in 1992 concluded that U.S. Soccer was not in the wrong for hiring him as the national team coach, the federation said on Monday.

The investigators' conclusions mean there is now no legal impediment to employing Berhalter, who remains a candidate for the coaching job which is now held by Anthony Hudson on an interim basis.
