Hegerberg, who won the inaugural women's Ballon d'Or in 2018, quit the national team in 2017 because of a dispute with the Norwegian Football Federation over the treatment of women's soccer in the country. The federation's attempts to break the impasse failed.

Feyenoord sat third, eight points back of Ajax, but a win at Johan Cruyff Arena would put the Rotterdam-based club right back in it.

Ajax experienced a foreboding start when a pyrotechnics display accidentally set fire to the club's own banners. The inferno caused a delay, but no injuries have been reported.

"Nunca nos tienen fe, pero saldremos adelante", dijo.
