BUDAPEST — When Hungarian and European football leaders invited Hungarian ambulance workers to the continent's first major international match open to fans since the COVID-19 pandemic began, 500 paramedics jumped at the chance to attend Thursday's Super Cup.

Champions League winners Bayern Munich of Germany and Europa League champions Sevilla of Spain meet at Budapest's Puskas Arena in a game that European football's governing body UEFA considers a safety test of games with spectators.

Bavarian Premier Markus Soeder on Monday urged Bayern Munich fans not to travel to the UEFA Super Cup final against Sevilla in Budapest this week or risk turning the event into a hotbed for COVID-19 to spread.

The German champions, who won the Champions League, face Europa League winners Sevilla in the Hungarian capital on Thursday.

"My stomach hurts thinking about the Super Cup. Budapest is a risk area. We have to be very careful that we don't risk turning it into a football-Ischgl," he said.

BUDAPEST — Hungarian champion Ferencvaros progressed to the Champions League playoff round for the first time after winger Myrto Uzuni went from villain to hero in their shock 2-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday.

Uzuni scored a 23rd-minute own goal which hauled Dinamo level after captain Gergo Lovrencsics had given the home side an early lead and he netted a 65th-minute winner to set up a two-legged tie against Molde.

Manchester United have signed Netherlands midfielder Donny van de Beek from Ajax Amsterdam on a five-year contract, the Premier League club said on Wednesday.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed but British media reported that United paid an initial fee of 35 million pounds ($47 million) for the 23-year-old.

Three Paris Saint-Germain players have tested positive for COVID-19, the Ligue 1 club said on Wednesday.

The club declined to comment when contacted by Reuters about the identity of the players but French sports daily L'Equipe reported Neymar, Angel Di Maria and Leandro Paredes tested positive after returning from Ibiza.

Kadeisha Buchanan won her fourth consecutive UEFA Women’s Champions League title — Lyon’s seventh overall — after Lyon defeated Wolfsburg 3-1 in the European final on Sunday. 

Buchanan is from Toronto, Ontario and is a defender for the Canada women’s national team. She’s made 101 appearances for Canada, tallying 96 starts, four goals and three assists.

With Lyon, she appeared in all seven Champions League matches this season, including five starts, and scored her first-ever UWCL goal against Fortuna Hjørring.

Lyon secured its fifth straight Champions League title on Sunday after an entertaining 3-1 win over Wolfsburg to cement its place as the greatest dynasty in the history of the women's club game. 

With seven titles overall, no team comes close to matching Lyon’s total (Frankfurt has four), and it says everything about the club's European dominance of late that all those victories have been recorded over the past 10 seasons.
