Miami FC’s Jaime Chavez earned Friday’s ESPN SportsCenter top play after sweetly connecting with a volley from 16 yards out. With the scores level at 0-0 in the 16th minute, Chavez timed his ridiculous strike perfectly off of a Blake Smith cross-field pass.
Chavez is a 29-year-old native of California who has spent most of his career in the NASL with the Atlanta Silverbacks and Miami.
The match would end in a 2-2 draw between Miami and the Tampa Bay Rowdies. With NASL play drawing to a close before the 2016 NASL Championship playoffs, both sides were desperately seeking all three points to catchup with Minnesota United in the fourth and final playoff position.
However, Chavez’s goal will be a small consolation for Miami, the strike becoming the odds on favorite for the NASL’s goal of the year.
