Hope Solo is getting a movie deal.
The former USWNT No. 1 goalkeeper, who helped the U.S. lift the 2015 Women’s World Cup trophy, will have her life story developed into a feature film, a news release announced on Tuesday.
"Hope Solo is a force of nature who broke down walls in women’s sports, both as a player and as a humanitarian,” writer/director Christine Crokos said in the release. “Her story is one of pure trailblazing and fierce athleticism — one that many generations to come will honor and look up to.”
Solo is one of the most recognizable women’s athletes in the history of U.S. sports. She made more than 200 appearances for the Red, White and Blue, winning the aforementioned World Cup and two Olympic gold medals.
The biopic will also focus on her life before and after the national team. She won a state title in high school before staring for the University of Washington in college. The 2009 U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year has also been an outspoken advocate for women’s rights and equal pay in soccer.
“We are very excited to be working to bring Hope’s life story to the big screen with Christine at the helm,” producer Ben Renzo said in the release. “Hope is an amazing athlete, with an intense competitive spirit who has achieved some of the highest accomplishments in women’s soccer as a professional goalkeeper.
“Her journey to becoming an elite athlete and one of the best soccer players at her position is incredibly motivating, and that’s what makes this story special to us. We want to make movies that entertain and inspire — and Hope’s story encompasses those themes.”
Solo’s story is more than just her soccer career and the Hope Solo movie will likely reflect that. Growing up she and her brother were briefly kidnapped — by their own father. In 2014, Solo was arrested for assault. Solo also ran for U.S. Soccer president in 2017. She last appeared for the USWNT in 2016, when she was suspended for six months following the Olympics.
The film will be produced by Argent Pictures, the same studio that made the bloody-as-hell Mel Gibson movie “Hacksaw Ridge.” Let’s hope this one isn’t as gory, but this is Hope Solo we’re talking about.
Jill Ahrens (American Made), Ryan Ahrens (Chasing Coral) and Ben Renzo (The Birth Of A Nation) will produce the film. Executive producers include former athletes Drew Brees, Tony Parker, Michael Finley and Derrick Brooks.
Sadly, the Hope Solo movie will probably not include any references to Chewbacca or Lando Calrissian, but it probably won’t cost $300 million to produce like “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”
If you can’t wait for the Hope Solo movie to come out, here’s two minutes from Solo herself, who grew up as a proficient goal scorer.
