The NCAA has moved three college soccer events out of North Carolina because of a discriminatory law legislating who can and cannot go into certain bathrooms.
These are the events the NCAA moved from North Carolina:
2016 Division I Women’s Soccer Championship, College Cup (Cary), Dec. 2 and 4.
2016 Division III Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships (Greensboro), Dec. 2 and 3.
The NCAA laid out its reasoning, which mainly involved North Carolina's HB2 law, the "transender bathroom" law.
Basically, the law is prejudiced against people of certain sexual orientations and gender identifications, and the NCAA wants no part of it.
From a statement on NCAA.org:
“Fairness is about more than the opportunity to participate in college sports, or even compete for championships,” said Mark Emmert, NCAA president. “We believe in providing a safe and respectful environment at our events and are committed to providing the best experience possible for college athletes, fans and everyone taking part in our championships."
Aw, come on. Don't grow a conscience on us now, NCAA. Y'all are too much fun to hate.
The North Carolina GOP, for its part, responded with nuanced caution.
Just kidding they yelled like loonies.
Here's a fun statement from North Carolina Republicsn Party spokesperson Kami Mueller:
“This is so absurd it’s almost comical. I genuinely look forward to the NCAA merging all men’s and women’s teams together as singular, unified, unisex teams. Under the NCAA’s logic, colleges should make cheerleaders and football players share bathrooms, showers and hotel rooms. This decision is an assault to female athletes across the nation. If you are unwilling to have women’s bathrooms and locker rooms, how do you have a women’s team? I wish the NCAA was this concerned about the women who were raped at Baylor,” the statement continued. “Perhaps the NCAA should stop with their political peacocking — and instead focus their energies on making sure our nation’s collegiate athletes are safe, both on and off the field.”
Ah, the old Internet defense of "I'm not mad, you're the one who's mad. I'm actually laughing." Classic.
It's only a matter of time before FOX Sports picks Mueller up and gives her a show in which she and Skip Bayless scream at each other.
This went a little off the rails, but good for the NCAA or having a backbone for once.
