United States women’s national team midfielder Sam Coffey needs to be the face of Squishmallow already. The Portland Thorns star shared that she has received a custom gold-medal Squishmallow following the USWNT’s victory in the Summer Games.
Coffey posted to her Instagram story on Wednesday that a family-friend stitched a gold medal onto the popular stuffed toy that comes in a variety of animal, foods and more. Her Squishmallow was a beet and the card said, “Way to ‘beet’ everybody.”

Coffey shared the story during a Portland Thorns press conference and fellow USWNT teammate Sophia Smith joked that she was upset she didn’t get one.

The Squishmallow lore with Coffey dates to earlier this year when she persuaded her fellow Portland Thorns teammates to buy into the fad. She was originally teased for her obsession but now has everyone on board.

Squishmallow are missing a real opportunity here to not have Coffey as an ambassador for the brand.
Coffey has rapidly become a staple in the USWNT’s midfield and played a major role in the run to gold this summer. Coffey made just three appearances for the USWNT in 2023 but now has 17 in 2024.
The 25-year-old started every game at the Olympics except the quarterfinal vs. Japan as she was serving a yellow card suspension.
