The Associated Press reported Wednesday that the recording from the plane carrying Chapecoense to the Copa Sudamerica final in Colombia that crashed Monday night shows the pilot saying the plane had run out of fuel.

The AP also reported that no traces of fuel have been found at the crash site.
As usual with these sorts of events, there had been wild speculation as to the cause of the crash, in which 71 people were killed. The recording doesn't necessarily prove the plane ran out of fuel, or that running out of fuel was the cause of the crash, but it's a step in the right direction to finding out what really happened.
Chapecoense had been traveling to their first-ever Copa Sudamerica final on a chartered flight when the plane crashed in the mountains outside Medellin, Colombia.
