A quick refresher: USWNT star Megan Rapinoe chose to join other athletes in kneeling during "The Star-Spangled Banner". We first saw Rapinoe participate in the silent protest on September 15, 2016, and that was not the last of it. Various athletes are refusing to stand during the anthem to draw attention to racial injustice in this country.
In September, Rapinoe stated that she will continue to protest the national anthem until she finds a better way to reach people and speak her mind. Not long ago, she teamed up with The Players’ Tribune to express her feelings about the controversial situation.
The midfielder for the USWNT explained, “I haven’t experienced over-policing, racial profiling, police brutality or the sight of a family member’s body lying dead in the street. But I cannot stand idly by while there are people in this country who have had to deal with that kind of heartache.”
